Course Description

The Automatic Transmission course teaches theory and hands-on instruction on automotive automatic transmissions while following the program standards set forth by the Automotive Service Excellence Education Foundation at the master level.

Justification

This course is required for Automotive Service Excellence (A.S.E.) certification. It is approved by the program advisory committee. It is a core course for the Automotive Technology AAS degree, TE certificate, and certificates of proficiency.

Student Learning Outcomes

  1. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to safely perform the tasks listed in the current edition of ASE Education Foundation Certification and Accreditation for Automobile Training Programs.
  2. Students will understand the components of a planetary gear set, know the gear combinations that can be obtained, and diagnose component failures.
  3. Students will be able to use the appropriate specialized tools and equipment to diagnose and repair automatic transmissions and transaxles.
  4. Students will understand, diagnose, repair, and adjust transmission application devices, clutches, bands, and mechanical holding devices.
  5. Students will understand the power flow through automatic transmissions and use this to diagnose component failures.
  6. Students will maintain a reasonably clean work environment.
