Title: Pesticide Applicator Safety Certification

Catalog Description: Safety training in natural resources equips students with essential skills and certifications needed for employment in the field and ensures they can perform their duties safely. As part of this training, students will obtain the Utah Pesticide Applicator License, which is mandatory for applying pesticides and managing weeds for both private companies and government agencies within the state. Licensure fee required.

Justification: One of the vital components of being employed in a natural resources related field is to have specific trainings. These trainings are designed to help students get entry-level positions in multiple natural resource related fields. These jobs give them hands-on experience, networking opportunities, and help build their resumes for future employment.


Student Learning Outcomes:
Students will successfully obtain a Utah Pesticide Applicator License. Students will pass the pesticide applicator exam administered by the State of Utah and receive their pesticide license.

Students will demonstrate knowledge of safe pesticide applicator practices for human health and the environment Students will demonstrate their understanding by passing the pesticide license exam as well as other quizzes, tests, or required assignments.


Content:
The main goal of this class is to prepare students to take the Utah Pesticide Applicator License exam. Students will take the exam in class and if they pass, will receive their pesticide license before the end of the course. Students will also be able to identify noxious weeds and calibrate spray equipment.

Students will be assessed in the following way

Pesticide License Exam 40 to 60%

Quizzes, tests, assignments 40 to 60%

Required materials will be a compilation of materials provided by the State of Utah and created in-house and assembled by the instructor.

Through lecture and hands on learning, students will demonstrate learning in safe pesticide use practices.
