Berin Stephens

Portrait of Berin Stephens with a saxaphone.

Saxaphone

Berin Stephens was born in Alaska and grew up in Chugiak, 21 miles outside of Anchorage. He attended Brigham Young University and received his bachelor's and master's degrees in Music Performance and Pedagogy specializing in saxophones. After finishing his master's, he moved back to Alaska and taught at the University of Alaska-Anchorage for several years. When he returned to Utah in 2005, he started a private music studio and taught at Utah Valley University.

Berin has been teaching saxophone and clarinet privately for over 35 years. He also has performed in just about every genre of popular music: jazz, classical, rock, blues, ska, country, Dixieland, and polka. He currently performs with several jazz groups around Utah and Salt Lake Counties, including the Night Star Jazz Orchestra, Valley Jazz Ensemble, City Jazz Ensemble, and numerous small jazz groups, including his own. Berin also enjoys keeping his classical chops in shape by performing occasionally with the Utah Valley Symphony and the Timpanogos Symphony. He regularly performs on all four saxophones (soprano, alto, tenor, and baritone), clarinet, bass clarinet, and flute.

When not performing or teaching, Berin enjoys reading and writing novels. He loves to get out in nature for walks and fresh air. He lives in Orem, Utah with his wife, Vicky. They have five children and eight (for the moment) grandchildren.
