Ensemble Auditions

choir

Auditions for Cadence Chamber Choir and Women's Chorale are the first Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday of each semester in the Choir Room/Recital Hall (M147). Sign-up sheet for audition times is located on Dr. Huff's board (M103).

Cadence chamber choir   (audition required)

  • Membership is open to all Main Campus students.
  • Rehearsals: M-T-W-Th, 4:30-5:20 PM, ECCLES 147

women's chorale   (audition required)

  • Membership is open to all female Main Campus students.
  • Rehearsals: T-Th, 3:30-4:20 PM, ECCLES 147

SINGERS ARE ASKED TO:

  • Vocalize to determine voice range
  • Sing a song, aria, hymn, or patriotic song (sing with provided accompanist, or with your own recorded track)
  • Demonstrate tonal memory (we play a short melody, you sing it back)
  • Demonstrate music-reading ability (sing a short melody using any method - solfegi is preferred)

Don't want to audition? Enroll in A Capella Choir instead. (CRN: 1350)

  • Membership is open to all students on the Main Campus, and can be repeated for
  • Fine Arts GE.

Snow Rock Band

Snow Rock Band (including Spotlight) auditions are held the first Friday of Fall semester at 1:00 pm at the West Campus Recording Studio. Be prepared with two songs from the set list.  Please be there 15 - 20 minutes early.  Amps will be provided. Sign-up sheet will be on the bulletin board by the Band/Orchestra room (M140).

Woodwind, Brass, and Percussion

Ensemble Audition Information for Woodwinds and Brass

Unless specified by the specific studio faculty, students auditioning for Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, and Badger Band should prepare 2 contrasting solo/etudes (one technical and one lyrical).  They should be prepared to sight-read and play scales.

Ensemble Audition Information for Percussion/Drum Set

Percussion students auditioning for Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band should prepare one etude or solo on snare drum, and one etude or solo on a mallet instrument.  These can be selected from a solo/etude collection, or a solo that the student has previously performed.  Students should also be prepared to sight-read on their choice of mallets, snare, or timpani.  Percussion/Drum Set students wishing to participate in Big Band, Jazz Combos, Rhythm Section, or Badger Band should be prepared to demonstrate various groove/style patterns (including swing, latin, funk, rock, etc.), and sight-read a given tune.

Students wishing to participate in Big Band or Jazz Combos must complete a regular band audition for Wind Ensemble/Symphonic Band.  In addition, jazz students should be prepared to play the following: 

Piano / Guitar:

  • Play a Jazz Standard of your choice (melody, chords, and solo if possible) that you love to play.
  • Play a Jazz Waltz style song such as "Footprints" by Wayne Shorter, "Some Day My Prince Will Come" or "All Blues" by Miles Davis
  • Play and comp to "C Jam Blues", a 12 Bar Blues in the key of C
  • Sightread a short big band passage (piano/guitar part) provided by Prof Morrow

Bass:

  • Play a Jazz Standard of your choice (melody and solo if possible) such as "So What" by Miles Davis.
  • Play a Jazz Waltz style song such as "Footprints" by Wayne Shorter or "Some Day My Prince Will Come" by Miles Davis
  • Play a Groove and walk a bass line to "C Jam Blues", a 12 Bar Blues in the key of C
  • Sightread a short big band passage (bass part) provided by Prof Morrow

Drum Set:

  • Play one song or groove of your choice that you love to play
  • Play "Take Five" by Dave Brubeck
  • Play "Four" by Miles Davis or another BeBop tune of your choice
  • Sightread Big Band passage (drum part) provided by Prof Morrow

Jazz Vocalists:

  • Sing any jazz standard song of your choice that you love to sing
  • Sing a Swing tune such as "A Tisket-A Tasket" or "How High the Moon" by Ella Fitzgerald or
  • Sing "All of Me" (published by Irving Berlin)
  • If you Scat, please show me what you can do! This is not a requirement.

To sign up for a specific time, the days and times will be posted on the bulletin board by the band/orchestra room (M140)

Auditions will be held on Wednesday Aug 20 through Friday August 22. Music major students must sign up for an addition time. 

Non music major students interested in Symphonic Band do not need to audition.

symphony Orchestra

Students who wish to play with the Symphony Orchestra should plan to attend class on the first day of school from 2:30 - 4:20 pm in the Band/Orchestra room (M140).  Students should bring their instruments and be ready to sight-read some exciting and enjoyable music.  The audition process will be explained at that time.
