Course Description

This course allows students to participate in chamber ensemble groups for woodwind players. It is available to music majors or non music majors who wish to develop their musicianship and small ensemble performance skills. This course may be repeated for credit.

Justification

This course provides students with opportunities to explore and experience standard woodwind ensemble literature. Courses like this are taught at NASM accredited institutions both in the state and across the country. This is similar to brass chamber, percussion ensemble, and string chamber music courses.

Student Learning Outcomes

  1. Upon successful completion of this course, students will have learned and demonstrated proficiency in standard works from the chamber music repertoire.
  2. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to perform their part independently and to communicate non-verbally with other members of the ensemble.
  3. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to play in an appropriate style for the genre and repertoire.
  4. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to proficiently perform selected repertoire in a public recital.

Course Content

This course is an introduction to the repertoire for small woodwind ensemble. Instrumentation varies according to class enrollment, but common ensembles are woodwind quintets, quartets, trios, and duos. Students may also participate in groups involving woodwinds and strings, or woodwinds and brass. This is a performance based class, so each class meeting will be a rehearsal in preparation for a concert.
