Course Description
This course includes staging and performances of arias and short scenes from operas, operettas, and musical theater, or the staging of a complete operatic work. It is intended for students in the vocal music advisement track, as well as those wishing for an advanced experience in vocal literature. This ensemble will provide students with an opportunity to develop technical skill, sight-reading ability, and knowledge of the repertory related to the ensemble. It further allows students to synthesize musical, historical and cultural knowledge into meaningful artistic expression. Audition required. May be repeated for credit.
Justification
This course provides vocal majors with an opportunity to perform great works of opera, which is especially critical for those pursuing performance advisement tracks. It counts as a minor ensemble toward graduation with a BMCM degree. Courses similar to this are taught at other institutions in Utah.
Student Learning Outcomes
- Upon successful completion of this course, students will demonstrate an understanding of the creative processes of rehearsal and performance.
- Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to proficiently perform scenes from operas in a variety of languages, including, English, German, Italian and French.
- Upon successful completion of this course, students will demonstrate technique as singing actors, specifically learning how to integrate technical skills with movement, communication and interaction.
- Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to analyze scenes and characters from an actor’s point of view, through beats, choice of objectives, actions, and obstacles congruent with the text. They will apply various character analysis tools as directed
- Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to collaborate creatively as a team to produce a professional quality production.
Course Content
Course content may be drawn from the following knowledge and skill building areas:● Communication Techniques - visual communication techniques● Production Skills - responsibility for a production aspect● Academic Skills - writing, research, discussion● Vocal development - application of technical development to character, expressive range and nuance● The ability to study and analyze dramatic, musical works, an understanding of genre, style, and direction.● An understanding of the contextual importance of Opera and musical theatre in the humanities, in the finearts and as part of the human experience.● Collaboration- Build verbal and written communication skills with all members of the collaborative design and production team.Material will be selected from a wide range of style, genre, historical and cultural backgrounds.
Key Performance Indicators: Students in opera workshop courses are assessed in the following ways (percentages are approximate): Participation Rates - Attendance at class sessions 40 to 60%Participation/Citizenship/Production teamwork 20 to 40%Final Performance 10 to 20%Written work 10 to 20%Representative Text and/or Supplies: Students will use scores from the Snow library to prepare scenes.
