Perfectionism

Management Tips

Pro and con checklist.

1. Make a list of the pros and cons of trying to be perfect

You may find that the costs of perfectionism are too great, and that compulsive behaviors actually outweigh whatever advantages perfectionism holds for you.

2. Be weary of "all-or-nothing" thinking

Perfectionists tend to see things as perfect or imperfect with nothing in between. Demanding perfection of oneself can quickly become overwhelming and lead to procrastination.

3. Be realistic about what you can do

Set goals within your skillset that can reasonably be accomplished. If you set unrealistic goals that are left unmet, you may find yourself disappointed or anxious.

4. Set time limits on your projects

Create a schedule and stick to it! When your time is up for a particular activity, move on to another one.

5. Learn to accept constructive criticism

If you stop making mistakes, you stop learning and growing. Remember criticism is a natural thing from which to learn, rather than something to be avoided at all costs.

6. Be aware of your relationships

Self-criticizing and "all-or-nothing" thinking can have a negative effect on those around you. Try to view your work through another's eyes; we are our worst critics after all.
